Professor Jeremy Espiritu, Head Instructor and Black Belt at Espiritu Jiu-Jitsu

Head Instructor · Black Belt

Professor Jeremy Espiritu

Professor Jeremy Espiritu opened Espiritu Jiu-Jitsu in Oxnard, California, bringing over a decade of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, and Judo from Renzo Gracie Los Angeles.

He received his Black Belt from Professor Shawn Williams, a Fifth Degree Black Belt under Renzo Gracie. Beyond his BJJ foundation, Jeremy has trained Muay Thai at Team Yokkao in Bangkok, Thailand and studied Judo in Tokyo, Japan.

As a competitor, Jeremy earned gold medals at the IBJJF Las Vegas Open and IBJJF Phoenix Open at both Purple and Blue Belt divisions, and has competed at the IBJJF World Championships and Pans.

A Channel Islands High School graduate and Oxnard College attendee, Jeremy is a local through and through. He met his childhood sweetheart Meyann at the Church of Christ in Oxnard, where they sang in the choir together. The two married and now live in Silverstrand Beach, Oxnard with their nine-month-old son, Elias. Jeremy volunteers in community outreach events with his local church — giving back to the city that raised him.

Off the mats, Jeremy can be found playing guitar, exploring hiking trails, traveling with his wife, catching live music, or enjoying a good movie. Most often, though, he's on the floor playing with Elias.

Coach Carlos Contreras Jr., Brown Belt coach at Espiritu Jiu-Jitsu

Coach · Brown Belt

Coach Carlos Contreras Jr.

Coach Carlos started his BJJ journey in 2008 and holds a Purple Belt earned under Chris Lopez, a 4th Degree Nova Uniao Black Belt. He moved to Oxnard in 2019 with his sons Lorenzo and Isaiah. In 2021, he earned his brown from Professor Jeremy here at Espiritu.

A decorated competitor, Carlos has earned medals at the IBJJF Las Vegas International Open and IBJJF Phoenix International Open. He brings this competition experience directly into his coaching.

Carlos has been coaching kids programs since 2014, with a focus on self-defense, fitness, and competition preparation. His patience and energy with young students make him a favorite among the kids and parents alike.

Married for over 20 years to Krisza, Carlos is a proud father to Lorenzo and Isaiah — both of whom train Jiu-Jitsu alongside their dad. When he's not on the mats with his sons, Carlos enjoys paddleboarding and hiking.
